What is Acne?
Acne is a common skin condition produced by clogged hair follicles with oil and dead skin cells. It is hormonal and tends to peak during adolescence. Acne is widespread in younger age groups ranging from 12 to 30 years. But, it may happen at any age.
It is characterized by the presence of blackheads, blemishes, whiteheads, pimples, and zits. It usually affects regions of skin with a high concentration of oil glands. These include the face, upper portion of the chest, shoulders, and back. Its appearance can cause anxiety, hostility, low self-esteem, and, in severe cases, depression.
What causes acne?
Sebaceous glands are small glands situated on the skin's surface. These glands are tiny holes in your skin and are connected to hair follicles.
Usually, sebaceous glands moisturize the hair and skin to keep them from drying out. They do this by secreting an oily fluid known as sebum. Acne occurs when the glands generate a large amount of sebum. Excess sebum combined with dead skin cells forms a clog in the follicle. This leads to pimples which can develop acne.
Acne's primary triggers are:
- Hormonal changes - Androgens are hormones that rise throughout puberty within both boys and girls. They cause the sebaceous glands to expand and produce more sebum. Hormonal changes in midlife, particularly in women, can also cause breakouts.
- Certain medications - Corticosteroid, testosterone, and lithium-containing medications are examples.
- Diet - Certain meals, particularly carbohydrate-rich items
- Lack of hydration during severe heat & humidity - A lack of water in your system can cause excessive oil release from your skin.
- Genetic disposition - Some families may have an inherited propensity to overproduce dead skin cells.
- Stress - Acne can be exacerbated by stress.
What type of Acne do I have?
There are various types of acne which include:
These are the most common forms of acne and remain under the skin. They’re small, mild, round white bumps that occur when a pore becomes clogged with dead skin cells and debris. They appear on the face, shoulders, neck, chest, and back.
Blackheads are visible, black, and appear on the surface of the skin. They form when a pore becomes blocked by a buildup of sebum and dead skin cells. The top of the pore remains open, although the rest of the hole is blocked.
Papules are tiny, pink, or red lesions that appear on the skin's surface. They are referred to as skin lesions since they are changes in the color or texture of your skin. Papules are a sort of inflammatory blemish that develops when the follicle wall has a high break.
Pustules are fluid or pus-filled pimples. They generally show as white lumps surrounded by red skin on the skin's surface. They are white or yellowish and are painful to the touch.
These are big, painful, nodular-like pimples implanted in the skin. If not treated promptly, they might lead to scar development.
Cysts are painful, pus-filled pimples on the skin's surface. When pores get clogged by a mix of bacteria, sebum, and dead skin cells, they may form. However, these blocks lie deeper beneath the skin and below the surface than nodules. Cysts may cause scarring.
